Bay Leaves
The bay tree is native to the Windward Islands and grows to a height of about 30 feet. Bay rum distilled from the leaves, is used in the perfume industry. Bay rum is also prepared from the oil. This has soothing and antiseptic properties. It is used in some foods, in toilet preparations, as a hair tonic and also as a necessary addition to the sick room to cool fevers; its astringent properties refresh the body.

BAY RUM has a centuries old history. The peaceful Arawak Indians, it is said, held the Bay Tree sacred. Later settlers discovered how refreshing toilet waters became, when mixed with the oil extracted from Bay leaves. Bay Rum can be used as an after shave lotion, a freshener for after a bath or shower, a massage oil, an antiseptic, and a tonic to invigorate and cleanse the scalp. Of all the agriculture practiced in Dominica, one plant stands out as being
quite consistent throughout a century when other crops have waxed and waned. The
West Indian Bay Plant, Pimento racemes is a sturdy evergreen tree of the Myrtle
family. Leaves and wood are distilled to produce the essential oil. Bay oil is
distilled by boiling the chopped leaves under pressure. Dominica Essential Oils

Commonwealth of Dominica which is the main producer in the world, producing more
